Created and written by award-winning playwright and television screenwriter Anya Reiss “Becoming Elizabeth” a period drama, is all set to release on 26th August 2022

Starring Alicia von Rittberg along with Romola Garai, Becoming Elizabeth, explores the history from the lens of England’s most iconic queen. Directed by Anya Reiss, Becoming Elizabeth explores the teenage years of Queen Elizabeth and her struggles to secure the crown, unraveling with drama, excitement and mystical facts of her journey. The series is premiering in India on 26th August exclusively on Lionsgate Play.

Talking about the role of women in period dramas, Romola Garai, playing Mary Tudor said, “I think it’s a fantastic genre for actresses. I’ve done a lot of adaptations of 19th century novels and the whole of their main focus of interest is female psychology. In stories like this, which are about kings and queens, women can’t be written out of history in a way that they can out of military history, for example, because of the fact they married kings and had their children. They played a really substantial role in monarchies and so there are often really good parts for women in period dramas. Often the audience is a lot of women too so I think that’s why they are really attractive to me as a woman myself.

Sharing her take on the making of period dramas, the actor added, “Also I think it’s very hard to tell the stories of your time at the actual time that you’re in it. There is the opportunity to talk about things that are of interest to you through the prism of history which gives you a) more clarity as a writer and b) more freedom.”

Lionsgate Play will exclusively stream Becoming Elizabeth on 26th August
