Five times Varun Sharma left us gobsmacked with his performance
In a sea of digital debuts, you can only make your mark when you’re distinctly noticed and your presence leaves the audience asking for more. Varun Sharma, who debuts in the OTT domain with Dinesh Vijan and Mrighdeep Singh Lamba’s show, Chutzpah, directed by Simarsingh zpreet was barely seen in its teaser for a few seconds. But that was enough to create curiosity around what the show is all about and what’s new in store for dear ‘Choocha’s’ fans.
For those who have tuned in late, Choocha is Varun’s most-loved screen name – his fans can barely get enough of it. Rome wasn’t built in a day and Varun didn’t establish a distinguished presence without some kick-ass performances. Here are five occasions when he left the audience gobsmacked:
Roohi: His character Kattani was widely loved. Varun used his theatre sensibilities to deliver a crackling, humorous and unique character who is in love with a ghost.
Chhichhore: He played the cute, lovable and sex-driven campus senior Gurmeet Singh Dhillon, alias Sexa, in this slice of life drama. The actor’s realistic approach to the character made it believable and also one that the film hugely relied on to drive home the punches.
Arjun Patiala: In an attempt to try something new, Varun played Onida Singh, a police officer who is essentially a side-kick to Diljit Dosanjh’s character, Arjun Patiala. The actor’s tremendous effort to play a part that takes himself very seriously lent the film its due share of humour.
Fukrey Returns: Rebooting a silly character from a hugely successful comedy film, and delivering it like a sack of gold is a task that only someone trained in theatre and performing arts can pull off. Varun, who played Choocha in Fukrey, reprised the role adding several layers to his performance which made the character endearing, memorable and set for a reboot in the third outing of the franchise.
Fukrey: When Varun was cast to play Choocha, a character that’s silly from its name to its eventual characteristics, he hadn’t dreamt that his honest portrayal would make it so popular. The actor worked doubly hard to keep his performance nuanced and that made Choocha a name that youngsters nationally love.
