Sony SAB’s Hastinapur Ke Veer is bringing alive the untold childhood of the Pandavas and Kauravas, exploring the relationships, values and lessons that shape their future. Among the key figures guiding the young princes is Dronacharya, portrayed by Jiten Lalwani whose discipline, wisdom and mentorship play a defining role in preparing the next generation of warriors.

In this conversation, Jiten Lalwani talks about stepping into the role of Dronacharya, his approach to portraying the legendary guru, working with the young cast, the values that make Dronacharya timeless, and what audiences can take away from his journey in Hastinapur Ke Veer.

1. What was your first thought when you were offered the role of Dronacharya?

My first thought was that this was not just another character, but a huge responsibility. Dronacharya is an iconic figure whom generations have grown up reading and hearing about. As an actor, I felt privileged to be offered such a role, but at the same time, I knew that audiences already had a strong image of him. My aim has been to portray him with sincerity, dignity, gravitas and emotional depth, while staying true to his essence and of course bringing my own interpretation to the character.

2. Since the show explores the childhood of the Pandavas and Kauravas, what new side of Dronacharya are audiences getting to see?

Most adaptations have focused on Dronacharya during the Mahabharata war or the later stages of his life. In Hastinapur Ke Veer, audiences are witnessing him as a mentor shaping young minds. They see his patience, compassion, his struggles as a teacher and the responsibility he carries while guiding children who will one day shape history. I think this makes Dronacharya feel much more human and relatable.

3. As someone portraying one of mythology’s greatest teachers, did the role make you reflect on the importance of mentorship in real life?

Every successful person has someone who believes in them, guides them and inspires them to become better. Throughout my acting journey, I have been fortunate to learn from wonderful directors and senior actors like Sudhir Pandey ji and Sooraj Thapar. I also had the rare privilege of working in productions associated with the legendary Dilip Kumar Sahab on two occasions. What I cherish the most is that I got to spend nearly a year visiting his home, interacting with him, listening to his thoughts and understanding the finer nuances of acting from the maestro himself. Those experiences became invaluable lessons that have stayed with me throughout my career. Playing Dronacharya reminded me that a true mentor does not merely teach a skill, but shapes a person’s character, values and confidence. That is something I deeply believe in.

4. Dronacharya shares a unique bond with each of his students. How did you approach building those relationships with the young cast?

We have an amazing group of children. They are incredibly talented, well-mannered and eager to learn. As we began working together, warmth, trust and mutual respect developed naturally, and I think that translated beautifully on screen. It made the teacher-student relationships feel honest and authentic rather than merely performed.

5. Off screen do you find yourself guiding or mentoring the child actors the way Dronacharya does on screen?

Whenever they ask for advice, I am always happy to help. I enjoy sharing whatever experience I have gathered over the years. Sometimes it is about acting and sometimes it is about patience, discipline or simply staying grounded. Since they love talking, I tell them “agar tum chahte ho ki duniya mein log tumhari baat karein, toh tum set pe aake kisi aur ki baat mat karo”. We have a lot of fun together. Children today are incredibly talented and quick learners, so it is always a two-way exchange. I am learning just as much from these young champs.

6. Many people know Dronacharya as a strict guru. Does Hastinapur Ke Veer reveal a different side of his personality?

Yes, definitely. Discipline is an important part of who Dronacharya is, but discipline without compassion has very little meaning. Hastinapur Ke Veer explores Dronacharya’s wisdom, empathy and the emotional burden of treating every student fairly despite their different personalities and circumstances. Audiences will discover a Dronacharya who is firm yet caring, authoritative yet deeply invested in the growth of each of his students.

7. Dronacharya believed that discipline is the foundation of excellence. Is that a philosophy you follow in your own life as well?

Yes. After spending nearly three decades in this industry, I have realised that talent may open doors, but discipline keeps those doors open. Being punctual, preparing for your scenes, respecting your team and constantly working on yourself are habits that matter far more than momentary success. Discipline has been one of the biggest reasons I have been able to sustain my career.

8. What lessons do you think parents and children can take away from Dronacharya’s journey in Hastinapur Ke Veer?

The biggest takeaway is that values are shaped during childhood. Hastinapur Ke Veer is an important reminder that parents and teachers together play a crucial role in building not just capable individuals, but good human beings. The show tells us that knowledge should always go hand in hand with humility, respect, perseverance and integrity. These timeless values remain just as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.
