Rajkummar Rao’s responses to ‘Mr & Mrs Mahi’ World Television Premiere on &pictures

Can you tell us a little bit about your character and how did you prepare for it?

“My character, Mr. Mahi, is a failed cricketer turned into a dedicated coach who plays a pivotal role in guiding Mahima, portrayed by Janhvi Kapoor, on her journey in cricket. He’s not only a mentor but also a partner who has faced his own struggles in the sport. To prepare for this role, I immersed myself in the world of cricket, training extensively to understand the techniques and strategies of the game. I spent time with professional cricketers to gain insights into their mindset and the emotional aspects of being an athlete and then came the part to work with Mrs Mahi because that relationship is the soul of the film. We had a couple of readings and otherwise we will also talk a lot about our characters with Sharan. Mr Mahi is a very complexed character. This preparation helped me portray the character authentically and brought depth to his journey.”

What intrigued you to take on Mr. & Mrs. Mahi?

“What drew me to Mr. & Mrs. Mahi was its exploration of love and relationships against the backdrop of ambition and also to get an opportunity to work with Sharan who is a very sensitive filmmaker. The narrative delves into the intricacies of partnership and the challenges that test bonds over time. I was particularly excited about portraying a character who not only supports a female athlete but also grapples with his own aspirations and vulnerabilities. The film beautifully highlights the importance of family, support, and the journey of two people growing together, which resonated deeply with me.”

How vital is it for you to have a supportive partner?

“Support in relationships is crucial, and empowering one another is key. A strong foundation of mutual respect and encouragement helps navigate both successes and challenges.”

Can you describe how your experience was working with Janhvi Kapoor?

“My relationship with Janhvi is one that I truly cherish. Having worked together before, we’ve developed a strong rapport that makes collaborating on set feel seamless. Janhvi is incredibly talented and brings so much energy to her roles. I admire her dedication and the passion she puts into her work. We have a great dynamic, where we support and motivate each other, which is essential, especially in a film like Mr. & Mrs. Mahi that has emotional depth and demands a lot from both of us. It has been a joy to grow together as actors and to share this journey on-screen.”

The film beautifully illustrates how family, teamwork, and understanding can lead to overcoming challenges together.
