After its phenomenal success at the box office, this heartwarming sequel is heading straight to your screens, and trust us, you don’t want to miss it! This time, Riley’s emotional world is expanding as she enters her teenage years, introducing new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. But don’t worry, familiar favourites like Joy, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are also back to navigate her ever-evolving mind. With an all-star cast lending their voices to these unforgettable emotions, Inside Out 2 promises a delightful and meaningful experience for fans of all ages. Let’s take a look at the voices that bring these characters to life.
Riley (Kensington Tallman)
Riley, the protagonist of the original Inside Out, returns as a 13-year-old girl stepping into the world of high school. In the first film, her emotions struggled to help her adapt to the major change of moving to a new city. Now, they face the even bigger challenge of guiding her through adolescence. With new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment thrown into the mix, Riley’s inner world has never been more complex. This time around, she’s voiced by Kensington Tallman, stepping into the role previously held by Kaitlyn Dias.
Joy (Amy Poehler)
Joy remains the leader of Riley’s emotional headquarters, always eager to ensure that everything runs smoothly. As the eternal optimist, Joy sees the silver lining in every cloud, though she learned in the first film that sometimes sadness is just as important as happiness. In Inside Out 2, Joy will have to navigate Riley’s teenage years, where the stakes for maintaining her bubbly outlook are higher than ever. Voiced by the ever-energetic Amy Poehler, who returns to the role, Joy continues to brighten every scene with her optimism.
Sadness (Phyllis Smith)
Sadness, known for her blue demeanour, is one of Riley’s original core emotions and was central to the first film’s heartwarming conclusion. Having learned to embrace her role as an important emotional guide, Sadness helps Riley process difficult feelings. With adolescence on the horizon, her presence is even more necessary. Returning to voice Sadness is Phyllis Smith, whose portrayal of this character is as unforgettable as it is endearing.
Anger (Lewis Black)
Anger returns with his fiery temper and quick-to-ignite personality. As the embodiment of Riley’s frustration and outrage, Anger has his work cut out for him in Inside Out 2, with puberty bringing its fair share of flare-ups. Once again, Lewis Black reprises his role as the voice behind the short, furious red figure, bringing all the rage-filled humour that made him a standout in the first film.
Disgust (Liza Lapira)
Disgust’s job is to protect Riley from anything that could be physically or socially “poisonous.” Whether it’s preventing Riley from eating broccoli or helping her navigate middle school drama, Disgust is as opinionated as ever. However, this time, she’s voiced by Liza Lapira, who steps in for Mindy Kaling. Lapira’s performance gives Disgust a fresh yet familiar tone as Riley faces new social challenges.
Fear (Tony Hale)
Fear is always on the lookout for danger, no matter how irrational. His constant worrying keeps Riley safe, even if it sometimes means overreacting to minor threats. In Inside Out 2, Tony Hale takes over the role of Fear, replacing Bill Hader. With his comedic flair, Hale brings a neurotic energy to the purple emotion that keeps Riley’s survival instincts sharp.
Anxiety (Maya Hawke)
One of the most prominent new emotions in Riley’s mind is Anxiety. As the name suggests, Anxiety overthinks everything, amplifying the fears and worries that come with being a teenager. Maya Hawke voices this new addition, lending her distinct voice to the emotion that keeps Riley on edge during her most awkward moments.
Envy (Ayo Edebiri)
As Riley watches her friends and peers, she can’t help but feel the sting of envy, a brand-new emotion in her mind. Envy is constantly comparing Riley’s life to others, amplifying feelings of insecurity. Voiced by Ayo Edebiri, Envy might be small in stature, but her presence in Riley’s emotional landscape is mighty.
Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos)
The French word “ennui” perfectly captures the apathetic and disinterested vibe of this new emotion. Ennui lounges around, rarely concerned with what’s happening in Riley’s life or in the emotional headquarters. Voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos, Ennui brings a detached coolness to Riley’s new emotional lineup, representing the classic teenage indifference to the world around them.
Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser)
Last but certainly not least, Embarrassment enters Riley’s mind as a blushing pink blob. Awkward and shy, Embarrassment makes frequent appearances during Riley’s teenage years. Paul Walter Hauser lends his voice to this new emotion, adding a relatable vulnerability to the mix as Riley navigates the often humiliating world of adolescence.
~ Premiering on 25th September, Inside Out 2 will be available exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar ~
