Sony Entertainment Television’s ‘Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum’ Explores The Inherit Human Tendency of Resistance to Change

Press Release
Mumbai, 6 April 2023

Delving into the lives of two strong-willed women from two diametrically opposing societal settings, each inspirational in their respective worlds, Sony Entertainment Television brings viewers a captivating story with ‘Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum’. The show follows the journeys of Damayanti, the principled traditionalist matriarch of the royal Barot family based in Ranak and Surilii, a vibrant and modern thinking young girl.

‘Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum’ focusses on the natural human nature of resistance to change – change tends to create fear and the usual reactions are to either fight, or flight. This close-to-life yet inspirational saga sees Kitu Gidwani playing Damayanti Barot, Tina Datta essaying the role of Surilii Ahluwalia and Jay Bhanushali portraying the character of Shivendra Barot. Produced by Swastik Productions, Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum is a remake of the popular Turkish drama İstanbullu Gelin (Bride of Istanbul) that will air on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) every Monday to Friday at 9:00 pm, from 10th April.

The sole breadwinner of her family, Surilii is responsible for her lazy aunt Pummy, her good hearted but irresponsible elder sister Sasha and a 6-year year old niece Dia. The Gramophone Cafe is her most prized possession that her deceased parents left behind and it is the only space that makes her feel the presence of her parents. For Surilii, TGC is not only a heritage that she holds very dear but is also a source of happiness for her and her customers. She is a protector, provider, and pride of her small 3-and-a-half-woman world.

For Ranakgarh’s Damayanti Devi – the royal legacy and each of her 4 sons are her pride and joy, and she works towards upholding their culture. She has a justified reason to believe that the influence of large cosmopolitan cities washes away our native culture. “Chhote badlaav paramparaon se bane mahal mein toofan le aatein hai” is her belief and her resistance to change is unshakeable. And this is the reason that she has enforced a tight rein on her four sons who she single-handedly groomed, nurtured, and deeply loves. She has a plan in place for each of her sons within which, Shivendra Barot, the eldest son of the Barot family must carry forward the royal lineage, but change is imminent when he develops feelings for Surilii.

Despite their diametrically opposing ways, the essence of these two women striving to safeguard their familial traditions is the same. Set in her ways, Damayanti is trying to save the honor and customs of her family while Surilii, who goes with the flow is giving her all in trying to protect the memories and legacy of her parents.

Tune in to watch ‘Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum’ at 9:00 pm every Mon-Fri premiering on 10th April only on Sony Entertainment Television!
