‘Shadow Assassins’ Is A Powerful Film Revealing The Truth Behind The Secret Killings In Assam

Some films are just meant to entertain the audiences while there are also films like ‘Shadow Assassins’ which make you think hard about the brutal ground realities of a north eastern state which for most of us Indians does’nt even exists in our normal discourse.
Based on the true events, the ‘Shadow Assassins’ tells the tragic tales about the killings of innocent Assamese people caught in the political turmoil in the state. Directed by two time national award winner filmmaker Nilaanjan Reeta Datta, ‘Shadows Assassins’ spares no punches to tell the gut-wrenching story of secret killings in Assam.
The story revolves around a student named Nirbhay Kalita who leaves his home in Guwahati, Assam to study in faraway city of Pune in Maharashtra. But the politically motivated atrocities and killings back in his home state disturbs him to no end and engulfs him and his family which deeply impacts him and changes the course of his life. Innocent people thought to be sympathisires of ULFA, an outlawed militant outfit, get brutally killed and thrown away in fields and forests, streams and rivers which marked one of the darkest period in the history of north-eastern of Assam. Caught in the political crossfire, the homes of Assamese people were also set on fire and life destroyed within no time. The grief and pain caused due to this mindless violence has been effectively captured by the director.
Notably, the ensemble cast of ‘Shadow Assassins’ comprise of Hindi, Bengali and Assamese film industries. Lead actors Anurag Sinha and Mishthi Chakravarty had given performances of a lifetime. Rakesh Om, Hemant Kher, Soumya Mukherjee, Rajeev Lal Borua, Monuj Borkotoky are impactful in their respective roles. The editing of the film is crispy, the music is haunting and the cinematography captures the beauty of the state and brutality perpetrated against the innocent people of Assam in a never seen before manner.
