Being rooted to where we belong shouldn’t be a choice – Srijani Ghosh
Australian based Indian singer Srijani Ghosh dropped her latest single “Reflection” recently. The song was penned by Poet & Lyricist Aalok Shrivastav and composed by Musician Sudeep Banerji. During an exclusive interview with Bollywood Spy, Srijani Ghosh shared the story behind “Reflection”, being in Australia how she managed to stay rooted in terms of her music choices and her future projects.
‘Reflection’ has received a lot of love from audiences and critics alike, how does it feels?
It feels too good to be true. I am overwhelmed, happy and what not ! It was much more than a dream come true for me! I am glad I could connect with the audience with my song and got such positive feedback from critics.
‘Reflection’ was launched in the presence of Pankaj Udhas, Hariharan, Talat Aziz. What was their reaction when they heard it?
Their reaction was very encouraging! They mentioned the lyrics by renowned poet Aalok Shrivastav and the composition by one of the best ghazal music directors Sudeep Bannerjee and my singing has come together as a wonderful blend of romance pain and liberation.
I was elated when they complemented me for my tonal quality! It makes me more responsible to work hard to excel further from here.
You have also been releasing covers of several songs, how did that journey started?
The journey started few years ago, I understand we all grow up listening to legends and singing their songs casually. Then slowly internet happened and covers started becoming popular. I realised covers can allow an artist to add their own perspective through arrangements and improvisation yet being true to the composition. And then that’s it, I took my chance too !
Being in Australia, how did you manage to stay rooted in terms of your musical choices?
I think being rooted to where we belong shouldn’t be a choice ! We will always have to respect ourselves who we are ! I understand music has happened to me that strong connection which has kept me steadily rooted even after being geographically far!
How did you develop an interest in Indian Classical Music?
I was born in a musical family! My mother is a singer and my father plays tabla. And to add on to it being a Bengali music and performing arts is a part of the lifestyle. So my interest was spontaneous, it didn’t had to be externally generated.
What are your Future Projects?
I do have a few things in the pipeline coming up.
I have recorded a wedding saga with the National Award winning music director Amar Kandha and I have recorded a song with one of most melodious music directors Arko Pravo Mukherjee which is going to release soon.
