Horror movie lovers will consume their content, regardless of the medium: Vishal Furia

With almost every film resorting to an OTT release last year due to Covid-19, a lot of big budget films were initially kept on hold with the aim of getting theatrical releases, but most of them were directed towards OTT because of the prolonged pandemic. While some flourished on the small screens, others suffered heavy criticism. Regardless of the fate of these films, the landscape of Indian entertainment took a linear shift.

While the success or failure of a film depends on several factors, the genre of the film plays a major role in determining its surface value demand. Speaking about horror films specifically, a major chunk of the audience which consumes this kind of content, (be it Indian or world cinema) do it regardless of the medium they are being offered on. Be it on an OTT platform or going to the theatres to watch the film, the audience for this genre is extremely loyal. Indian film-makers often use this opportunity to present their product fearlessly, without having to worry about the pandemic. Vishal Furia, director of ‘Chhorii’, which managed to get in a positive response on OTT by the viewers has this to say, “The best part about making a horror film is that you know that there’s a ready audience base out there which is loyal. So whether you go for an OTT release or decide to release your film in the cinemas, it doesn’t matter. People who love/are willing to explore the genre will show up. I’m glad that the audience in India is also becoming more receptive of horror as a genre slowly and steadily, thus giving storytellers like us the much needed encouragement to make more products like Chhorii and Stree. Look forward to making many more!”
